[Bangkok] Ms. Maria & Mr. Singh may have closed its Singapore outlet, but you can still try it if you happen to be in Bangkok.
Located in Bangkok’s increasingly-hip Ekkamai district, it promises a dining experience that is as colourful as its concept.
It is also included in the Michelin Guide
You may wonder what’s up with the name.
It is inspired by a whimsical love story between a Mexican woman and an Indian man.
The restaurant combines the robust flavours of Indian cuisine with the vibrant zest of Mexican fare.
It’s a narrative that unfolds not only in the dishes but also in the space itself.
Walking in and heading up, I was greeted by a lively, colourful and playful interior.
Bright blues and warm oranges dominate the décor, creating a space that feels cheerful and relaxed.
I sat right at the counter where you can view the open kitchen.
That allows you to peek at the chefs weaving together the flavours of two diverse cuisines.
There’s something very appealing about the setting — it’s quirky but not overwhelming.
The menu is where the magic truly lies. The Papdi Chaat (THB 360 for 2 pcs), an Indian street food staple, gets a bold makeover.
It arrives with a yoghurt sphere balanced on a tiny taco shell, sprinkled with chutney and pomegranate seeds. Each bite is an explosion of tangy, sweet, and spicy notes. Loved it.
For the mains, the Pork Vindaloo Tacos (THB 450) come recommended.
The fiery, tangy notes of the vindaloo are unexpectedly well-suited to the soft taco shell, creating a blend of heat and comfort.
Then there’s the Quesadilla (THB 420) – choose the Keema or Chilli Cheese, which I found irresistibly satisfying.
Spiced minced meat meets gooey cheese inside a quesadilla, and the result is indulgent but balanced. If you love bold flavours, this dish is likely to linger in your memory.
Curry lovers should not miss the Chicken Tikka Masala (THB 680) or the famoous Gaggan’s Crab Curry (THB 820) – which was what I ordered.
The crab meat is sweet and tender (pretty generous in portion too), swimming in a curry rich with Indian spices.
The flavours are complex but approachable, and the dish pairs beautifully with a side of warm bread or rice.
Desserts here are no afterthought. The Pistachio and Rose Tres Leches (THB 420) can be the perfect end to your meal.
Service was attentive without feeling intrusive. The staff are quick to explain the dishes, and their enthusiasm adds to the experience.
Ms. Maria & Mr. Singh is a place I’d recommend to those looking to explore something different.
While not every dish may wow everyone, the creativity on the menu and the welcoming atmosphere make it worth a visit.
