Korio’s return to Singapore’s food scene feels like a welcome reunion with an old friend. There’s something comforting about the simplicity of good sandwiches and doughnuts, done well.
After closing its Far East Square outlet late last year, Korio has reopened at IOI Central Boulevard Towers in the CBD.
The new location provides a larger space with dine-in seating, though not many.
Korio’s husband-and-wife owners Myron Tan and Shaz Henshaw creates a variety of New York-style sandwiches and Brooklyn-inspired brioche doughnuts.
These include the Breakfast Sandwich with crispy luncheon, cheddar, and brioche ($14), Mortadella & Pickles with grilled mortadella and mustard mayo ($15.50), and Sausage & Egg with a maple sausage patty and potato roll ($14).
The Breakfast Sandwich seems like their most popular, as it was sold out by late morning when I arrived.
Vegetarian options include the Caprese Grilled Cheese with mozzarella and caramelised onions ($15) and the Mushroom Melt with roasted mushrooms and arugula ($16.50).
Other highlights are the Jambon Beurre with shaved ham and Parmigiano Reggiano ($18.50), Lox with smoked salmon and pickled beetroot ($18.50), Tuna Melt with pickled jalapenos and tomatoes ($16), Chook with roast chicken salad and brie ($17), and Smashed Meatballs with Sichuan chilli oil on an English muffin ($15).
I ordered the Sausage & Egg ($14) sandwich which didn’t disappoint.
The favourite part?
The maple sausage patty which brings that subtle sweet and savoury kick (I would recommend slowly chewing to savour the combination of flavours. Also loved the ooziness of the soft egg.
The hot mayo ties it all together, giving the sandwich a bit of heat without overpowering the other ingredients.
The potato roll is worth a mention too, soft yet holding everything together nicely, soaking up the juices without getting too soggy.
Korio’s doughnuts are made with brioche dough – fluffy, light, and with just the right amount of chew.
Got the Cinnamon Sugar doughnut with whipped honey butter which is satisfying-soft, good to go with a cup of coffee on the side.
The main downside? The shop can get busy and cramped, especially during peak hours.
Perhaps the waiting and collection system can be improved, as the lack of clear separation between dine-in and takeaway orders leads to crowding inside the café.
