Some coffee shops allow you to take a small escape from the usual bustle of Singapore.

Late last year, I wrote about Kyuukei Coffee at 121 Bukit Merah Lane 1 (near Alexandra Village Food Centre) and have visited it from time to time since.

Surprise, surprise. The humble coffee shop has opened a new space at
KADA at Maxwell.

KADA is converted from the 101-year-old former St Andrew’s Mission Hospital, now a creative lifestyle and wellness hub.

The ground floor houses a small selection of food and beverage outlets, blending heritage with modern use.

As for Kyuukei Coffee, the name “Kyuukei” translates to “rest” or “break” in Japanese.

There are more seats now than the original outlet, though it can be packed quickly at times.

The food at Kyuukei Coffee offers a small mix of hearty toasties, light tarts, and pastries.

Toasties include Brisket Pesto ($22), Morty Pesto ($15), and Vegemite ($8). Tarts feature options like Mortadella Spinach Quiche ($7), Curried Cauliflower Galette ($7), and King Oyster Mushroom Galette ($7).

Experimental items include Bean there, Cheese that ($6) and Jam-packed Thick Toast ($4.50), which combines thick sourdough with butter and a choice of three berry jam or lemon curd.

Their coffee menu is simple but well-curated. Espresso-based drinks make up most of the options – from a straightforward Espresso ($4) to a creamy Flat White ($5). The beans used rotate.

I went for the Latte ($5.50), and it hit the right balance – smooth, with a light but lingering finish.

The Iced Black is also great on a hot day, and the fruity notes of the Colombian beans made for a refreshing pick-me-up.

Pastries here are worth a try, even if you’re not that hungry.

There are items such as Banana Bread ($4.50), Lemon Olive Oil Cake ($4.50), Big Brownie ($4), Canele ($4), and Financier ($4).

The Canelé ($4.50) is crunchy on the outside with a soft, custardy centre that made me pause mid-bite.

Kyuukei Coffee doesn’t try too hard – it just delivers good coffee, pastries, and a quiet space to slow down. Sometimes, that’s all you really need.
