[Bangkok] Sorn, a distinguished restaurant in Bangkok, has made history by becoming Thailand’s first to receive the prestigious 3 Michelin stars.

This accolade, announced in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2025 edition, highlights Sorn’s exceptional Southern Thai cuisine.

Sorn Sets a Historic Benchmark: Thailand’s First 3-Michelin-Star Restaurant

Is this the most difficult to book restaurant in Bangkok?

Sorn is also ranked No. 38 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and No. 11 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2024.

The restaurant, helmed by Chef Supaksorn ‘Ice’ Jongsiri, is known for its deep commitment to Southern Thai cuisine.

Let’s start with the hard part: the reservation.

To reserve a table at Sorn in Bangkok, visit their official website, sornfinesouthern.com, where reservations open two months in advance, typically at 12pm Bangkok time.

Due to high demand, it is crucial to book as soon as slots are released.

The reservation process requires creating an account, and you’ll receive a confirmation email after booking. Make sure to note any dietary restrictions during the process, and be aware of their cancellation policy.

Sorn Bangkok: A Michelin-Starred Tribute to Southern Thai Cuisine

Back to Sorn. It is located in a beautifully restored 90-year-old house, with interiors that reflect Thailand’s southern rainforests.

The design incorporates arched metalwork, wood accents, and lush greenery, creating an environment that feels more like a luxurious home than a traditional restaurant.

Unveiling Sorn: Bangkok's Ultimate Southern Thai Dining Experience

The dining experience at Sorn is both structured and elaborate, featuring a 24-course tasting menu that explores the breadth of Southern Thai flavours.

You are not reading wrongly. 24 items. The meal could last about 3 hours or so.

Why Sorn is the Talk of Bangkok's Culinary Scene

Note that a course menu is priced at THB 7200, which works out to be approximately USD 201.60 and SGD 273.60. Excluding taxes. It is expensive.

Sorn

As there are too many dishes, I shall mention a few highlights.

Sorn Bangkok: An Intimate 24-Course Journey Through Thailand's South

“The Ocean” is a celebration of the bounties of the sea, presented in a way (served raw) that highlights the natural flavours of the seafood.

You get a medley of Phuket lobster, spotted Babylon, and blue crab, all sourced from the pristine waters of Southern Thailand.

The signature Crab Stick from Sorn

The “Crab Stick” is their star dish apparently.

It features blue crab and mud crab roe, combined with a fiery yellow curry. The crab is fresh, sweet, and delicate, complemented by the rich and spicy curry.

Complex, very spicy, with interplay of flavours.

The Sea Holds the Forest from Sorn Bangkok

Dishes such as the signature rice salad “The Sea Holds the Forest”, showcase the intricate balance of local ingredients like turmeric rice, jasmine, and herbs.

All brought together with a tangy and aromatic fish sauce.

Southern Thai Flavours Shine at Sorn, Bangkok's Michelin Gem

One of the more unique aspects of dining at Sorn is their commitment to traditional cooking methods.

If you ask me what is one dish I remember most fondly, it is the rice. Yes, the plain, ‘simple’ rice.

Sorn Bangkok: The Pinnacle of Southern Thai Gastronomy

The rice is cooked in a clay pot over charcoal, a method that requires constant attention but results in a fragrant and fluffy texture that is difficult to replicate with modern techniques.

As I had a seat facing the kitchen, I would see all the effort needed to cook that rice – and it was probably the best Thai rice I ever had.

A Taste of Southern Thailand in the Heart of Bangkok at Sorn

The atmosphere at Sorn is intimate and exclusive, with seating for only 20 guests.

The service is attentive and knowledgeable, and this small scale allows for an incredibly personalised dining experience.

Sorn Bangkok: Where Culinary Artistry Meets Southern Thai Tradition

So, where’s the downside, other than the difficult booking?

The complexity and presentation of the dishes may feel overly elaborate, and overly long-drawn to some.

I thought it would do with a cut of at least 2 or 3 items for a better flow.

While I also enjoyed the crispy Roti which went well with the Southern Green Curry, it was perhaps one carb too much.

Sometimes, you have got to let it go, to prevent bordering on ‘over-full’.

Petit Four from Sorn in Bangkok

With that said, do leave some stomach room for the Petit Four, which is a dessert trolley of some of Thailand’s most representative sweets in miniature forms.

I really wished I had more space for them.

Desserts and Sweet Treats from Sorn in Bangkok

In the end, Sorn is as much about storytelling as it is about food.

The combination of Southern Thai flavours, meticulous preparation, and an elegant setting makes it a destination for that one special treat.
