[Johor Bahru] Talk about Johor Bahru style Kue Teow (or Kway Teow), and I would think of rice noodles tossed in a dark, savoury sauce that clings to each strand with a sprinkle of crispy lard to add that crunch.

Isn’t that bliss?

I happened to walk past Ah Meng Kue Teow at Taman Melodies, and knew I couldn’t miss it.

With over three decades of history, this eatery is a hit among locals who appreciate Teochew cuisine, particularly the warm, well-prepared broth meeting the rice noodles.

The server mentioned that many Singapore celebrities dine here.

Regulars will notice the eatery’s fresh look following recent renovations.

It showcases a brand-new storefront that is air-conditioned in setting, different from its previous space.

Ah Meng, the person behind the name, has years of experience and brings a personal touch to his cooking, evident in the consistent quality of the meals served.

Of course, it is the staff doing the cooking now.

You can add various ingredients from pork, liver, kidney, fish slices, oyster, abalone, fishmaw to scallop.

Bowls are priced from RM9.50 to RM21.50 for the large portion.

Other carb options are yellow mee, bee hoon, bee tai mak, and rice.

The Kue Teow soup is particularly noted for its clear, tasty broth which had this nice sweetness, making it a favourite among locals.

The kue teow was well-cooked, and the slippery rice noodles would just effortlessly slide down the throat.

I also opted for the Pork and Liver dry version of their Kue Teow.

Despite ordering the smallest bowl as I was already full, the portion was more than sufficient and left me feeling content.

One of the highlights of my meal was undoubtedly the texture of the rice noodles.

They were smooth and slippery, enhancing the overall enjoyment as they seamlessly mingled with the dark sauce, releasing an enticing lard aroma that promised flavour in every bite.

However, the pork slices were slightly on the tougher side, and marred the overall experience a little.

Need to mention that house-made chilli sauce added another layer of depth to the dish.

If you want to take a bottle home, you can: it is priced at RM15.

To round off the meal, there are side offerings like Fried Tou Kee (RM6.50) and Fish Cake (RM6.50), though they are not the main stars.
