[Bangkok] Some friends (different friends) recommended that I visit Song Wat during this trip, a historical neighborhood in Bangkok known for its blend of traditional charm and modern buzz.
The up-and-coming trendy place, they say.
The area, which lies between Chinatown’s main road and the Chao Phraya River, is one of the city’s oldest trading quarters.
Today, it is a vibrant spot filled with everything from ancient shrines to trendy art galleries, eateries, and cafes. So here I go.
Getting to Song Wat is not that difficult.
The nearest MRT station is Wat Mangkon, which is about a 12-minute walk away. You can also reach Song Wat by ferry; the Rachawongse pier is just a 3-minute walk from the neighbourhood.
While looking for a lunch spot, I happened to chance upon Rong Klan Nuea โรงกลั่นเนื้อ 牛面王 for Braised Beef Noodles.
It turns out it was a really popular place when it first opened (though was relatively empty when I visited), owned by Golf Phlat who is recognised as a leading food influencer.
There is another outlet at EmSphere near Phrom Pong BTS station.
The eatery operates out of a repurposed two-storey Sino-Portuguese shophouse that has this rustic appeal, with just a few seats and tables.
The first thing I spotted was the large pot with tantalising aroma of herbs and beef emanating.
The menu at Rong Klan Nuea is straightforward.
Main courses include Braised Beef Broth Noodle Worthy (THB 150), Braised Beef Broth Noodle Very Generous (THB 250), and Emperor Braised Beef Noodle Very Generous (THB 250).
Additionally, there are options for those preferring drier dishes, such as Dried Braised Beef Noodle “Worthy” (THB 150) and Dried Braised Beef Noodle “Very Generous” (THB 250).
For non beef eaters, the menu offers Chicken Noodle Soup (THB 95) and Dried Chicken Noodle (THB 95).
I went for the basic Braised Beef Broth Noodles (THB 150).
The bowl is a medley of braised beef, beef balls, sliced tenderloin and tendon in soup. I was surprised to find the broth lighter and cleaner-tasting than usual, almost reminding of consommé
While most beef noodle soups are typically robust, herbal and intense, this was not quite the same.
I liked it actually, but perhaps not everybody would fancy this rendition.
The dry version comes tossed in a savoury-sweet chili oil and topped with crispy garlic. This was good on its own too.
I actually prefer this Braised Beef Noodles than the other eatery which went viral a couple of years back.
