Delhi Lahori at Tekka Food Centre offers an unpretentious culinary experience that captures the essence of Pakistani and Indian food.
The humble stall has also been listed in the Singapore Michelin Guide with a Bib Gourmand.
Accordingly, they incorporate Delhi and Lahore flavours.
The cuisine of Lahore is characterized by its bold, spicy flavours and extensive use of meat, especially beef, chicken, and lamb.
If you are unsure what to pick, there are affordable sets of Butter Chicken Naan ($6), Keema Chapati ($6), Chicken Masala Rice ($6), and Vegetarian Set ($6) which includes a naan, rice and 2 vegetables.
The price point is another attraction, offering good value for money with most dishes priced around $5-$7, making it an affordable option for quality Indian food in a city known for its high living costs.
You can top up items of Seekh Kebab ($7), Mutton Masala ($5), Chicken Tikka ($6), Tandoori Chicken ($5) and more.
What I noticed was Delhi Lahori’s cooking style still remains traditional, despite a small stall.
Each naan is slapped by hand into the tandoor, baked to a blend of softness with charred edges, providing a rustic and authentic taste.
I ordered the Garlic Naan ($2 top-up), and was first surprised at the size of it.
Garlic Naan is a popular variation that involves sprinkling chopped garlic on the naan before it is baked. The garlic caramelises slightly in the heat of the tandoor, infusing the bread with a robust, aromatic flavour.
The taste is comforting, offering a balance of garlic’s pungency with the soft, pillowy texture of the bread.
The Naan is also rather doughy, making it a suitable accompaniment to rich curries and grilled meats. But eat it fast, as the crispiness tends to diminish quickly.
I was more indifferent towards the Butter Chicken.
While the chicken was well-cooked and tender, I wished that the gravy could have been thicker and creamier.
The setting is very much a typical hawker environment, and seats can be harder to find during peak period.
This place might not suit those looking for a quiet dining experience, but is good for those who enjoy the vibrancy of Singapore’s street food scene and are looking for genuine flavours without frills.
