[Seoul] Salt Bread, or ‘sogeumppang’ 소금빵, has become a hugely popular pastry in Seoul, available in countless bakeries.

And one bakery café that sells Salt Bread in all forms?

Artist Bakery 아티스트 베이커리 at Anguk.

Located near Exit 1 of Anguk Station, it has gained a reputation as a must-visit café since its opening.

I need to warn you that the queue can be quite substantial.

One way to save some time is to register via the CatchTable app, monitor the waiting time remotely, and turn up when your queue number is ready.

This system enables customers to explore the surrounding area while awaiting their turn. It took about 2 hours plus till my turn.

Upon arrival, you will find a European-inspired decor featuring handwritten signage and rustic wooden floors that aim to create a quaint atmosphere.

If you find the style familiar, that is because it is established by the team behind the immensely popular London Bagel Museum.

You can find all kinds of Salt Breads, including plain hard and soft varieties.

There are truffle, basil pesto, garlic butter, cinnamon, blueberry, coconut, squid ink cheese, sesame, sausage jalapeño, potato cheese, lemon, Earl Grey milk jam, double chocolate, organic whole wheat, to pretzel salt breads.

For those seeking a heartier option, the bakery provides sandwiches such as the jambon-beurre, featuring quality ham and butter nestled within their signature bread.

During my visit, there was a newly introduced Matcha Curd Fresh Cream Salt Bread (6,800 won).

When I tried it, I understood what made the shop so popular. The bread itself boasts a crisp crust and a soft, chewy interior.

The subtle saltiness complements the buttery flavour. As for the fresh cream, it adds a light, velvety texture that makes each bite feel like a dessert disguised as a bread roll.

It is a notch better than some of the famous Salt Breads around, but some may feel it is not worth the wait.

My other favourite is the Truffle Salt Bread, which infuses a delicate truffle aroma that enhances the overall taste without being overpowering.

Some of the other breads tasted slightly more ordinary in comparison. My friends who came along didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.

Despite the bakery’s popularity, the atmosphere was unremarkable and resembled that of a standard bakery.

They felt the baked goods were decent but failed to live up to the hype, and the long wait added to their disappointment.

If you really love Salt Breads and European-inspired décor, I still Artist Bakery is worth a go.
