[Seoul] An American-themed bakery serving MBTI breads?
Located near Yongsan Station, What a Bread 왓어브레드 brings a slice of American charm to Seoul.
To visit What a Bread, take Seoul Subway Line 1 to Yongsan Station and use Exit 1. The journey from the station to the bakery takes approximately 7 – 10 minutes on foot.
When it comes to cafes, Koreans are all about the details.
The exterior, adorned with a large American flag, resembles a rustic farmhouse, creating a distinctive presence in the area.
Inside, the warm wooden decor and spacious layout, that you almost feel like you are in a barnyard.
It may or may not be your type of aesthetics, but you certainly have to give it to them for the effort.
The bakery is renowned for its diverse selection of breads and pastries, with over 20 varieties available daily.
The recommended? The MBTI-themed doughnuts, each representing different personality traits, which adds a playful twist to the menu.
There are customers who buy all four as gifts – mixing and matching them (The young Koreans are huge on MBTI personalities, especially when it comes to dating.)
Being the type ‘I’, I had to order the ‘I’ bread. It features a soft, fluffy doughnut filled with smooth pistachio cream and topped with a sprinkle of pistachios.
Not bad, though the bread layer can be on the thicker side.
Other options include Myeongran Baguette (7,900 Won), Truffle Nurungji Salt Bread (4,900 Won), Melon Salt Bread (4,300 Won), Green Onion Cream Cheese Salt Bread (4,700 Won), and classic Salt Bread (3,800 Won).
Sweet selections like the Tiramisu Maritozzo and Walnut Cream Cheese Bread (6,500 Won) offer more indulgent flavours for dessert lovers.
I had to order the American flag tart, aptly named “USA” (5,900 Won).
This signature tart showcases a visually striking design reminiscent of the American flag, arranged to represent the stars and stripes.
The tart combines a buttery crust with layers of fresh strawberry and blueberry jams on almond cream and pastry.
What? There is even a US Carrot Cake Cream Latte (7,500 Won).
This latte combines freshly extracted carrot juice with creamy milk, resulting in a smooth and velvety texture. The drink is topped with a light layer of whipped cream. Yums.
What a Bread has quickly become a popular spot, often resulting in queues, especially on weekends. It’s advisable to visit during off-peak hours to fully enjoy the offerings without the wait.
