[Johor Bahru] Singaporeans have a longstanding love affair with café hopping in Johor Bahru (JB).

The laid-back ambiance, coupled with the allure of discovering hidden gems, makes JB an irresistible weekend getaway for many from the island city-state.

Founded by a couple named Max and Nana, the original Nanamax Cafe made its debut in Mount Austin.

Rebranding to Nanamax Patisserie, they later relocated to a spot opposite The Mall, Mid Valley Southkey, with seating for up to 20 guests.

Adorned with warm lighting, plush sofas, and light wooden furnishings, Nanamax Patisserie crafts its desserts using traditional French techniques.

Every dessert is handmade and freshly prepared daily.

During our visit, we saw 9 meticulously crafted desserts displayed on the glass shelves. Each dessert boasted a distinct and dainty design.

The creativity and effort infused into each dessert were evident, making each piece unique.

The Dinosaur (RM21.90, SGD6.40) intrigued me, with each piece displaying a different expression. It is a matcha mousse cake combined with jasmine ganache, almond praline, sponge cake, and sable.

I opted for the Piggy (RM22.90, SGD6.70), a delightful dessert featuring cream cheese mousse, lemon custard, mango jam, atop an almond butter cake, all encased in a tart shell.

The cream cheese mousse had a delicate sweetness, harmonized by the fruity hints from the lemon custard and mango jam. The almond butter cake and tart shell introduced a contrasting texture.

My personal favorite was the Lucky Cat (RM20.90, SGD6) crafted from pistachio mousse.

Its pistachio flavor was subtle yet distinct, and the mixed berry cream cheese amplified the nut’s earthy essence.

The Tie Guan Yin (RM18.90, SGD5.50) deserves a mention, even if it lacked the cuteness of the other desserts.

Infused with Tie Guan Yin tea, both in the chiffon sponge cake and the piped cream, its aroma was unmistakably fragrant and delightful.

However, the added grapes were a tad sour, overshadowing the aromatic tea scent and flavor.
