[Johor Bahru] I was on a search for old-school Wanton Mee in JB, and was recommended to Yit Foh Wan Tan Mee Restaurant 益和云吞面 which has been around for many years.
Plus point: it is located in Taman Century, right opposite the popular KSL Mall.
The eatery is also opened till late night 1am on quite a number of days for supper goers.
One minor inconvenience might be the difficulty of finding parking due to the many F&B establishments around the area.
You would find yourself surrounded by an ambiance that harks back to an earlier era, seemingly frozen in time.
The signature dish here is, of course, the Wanton Mee (RM8, RM9, RM10), available in various sizes and with options for different levels of spiciness or served in soup.
Other items include the Wanton Dry (RM5), Wanton Soup (RM5), and Fried Wanton (RM5.50).
What I noticed was that instead of the usual black sauce, the sauce was savoury, slightly salty and aromatic, also oily due to the use of sesame oil.
But when you toss with the noodles, it gave the strands a good coat and fragrance.
I liked the homemade egg noodles that offered a satisfying bite and flavour.
You can say it has that ‘al dente’ quality, different from the typical.
The char siew (barbecued pork) that accompanied the noodles could be a tad dry at times.
Although the wantons were kind of small, they were still juicy and flavorful, with smooth skins and well-seasoned fillings.
You can also include additional sides such as Fried Fish Roll, Fried Beancurd Sheet, Prawn Cake, Fish Cake, and Pork Meat Roll (starting from RM5) for nibbles.
Despite its many positives, some long-time visitors reflected online that they have noted a decline in taste over the years.
However, many still find Yit Foh a reliable spot for a good plate of Wanton Mee at a convenient location in JB.
