[Ipoh] Heading to Ipoh’s Pusat Perniagaan Sengat to find the cafe was quite an ‘adventure’.
You see, this part of the city is known for its scenic limestone hills, far from the town centre.
It is not difficult to see why this cafe is popular, even though it is considered secluded.
It is part of the well-known Chang Jiang White Coffee chain 长江白咖啡, with rustic charm and serene surroundings, set amidst limestone hills.
As Ipoh is a relatively small city, it typically takes no more than a 20-30 minute drive from most central locations. I took a Grab, and the journey from Old Town took about 15-20 minutes.
The cafe itself is spacious, with both indoor and outdoor seating. It wasn’t as hot as I expected, enhanced by cooling fans that help keep the atmosphere comfortable.
The star of the menu is, unsurprisingly, the White Coffee (RM5.20 for hot, RM5.50 for cold).
Known for its smooth and rich flavour, the coffee strikes a balance between bitterness and sweetness, thickened with condensed milk.
Arriving with a frothy layer, it does leave a pleasant aftertaste that lingers.
While the coffee shines, the food offerings can be hit-or-miss.
You can have Dry Fried Wanton Noodles (RM9.90), Dry Sauce Wanton Noodles (RM9.90), or Soup Wanton Noodles (RM9.90).
The noodles are firm, thin with a QQ bite, tossed in a savoury soy sauce mix. Decent, but not overly impressive. The deep-fried wanton are light and crispy though.
Other interesting dishes include the Mama Curry Noodle Soup (RM11.00), which comes with minced chicken, a hometown meatball, and crispy fish roll, and the Mama Spicy Rice (RM14.90), which is served with spicy chicken, satay chicken, and appalam on the side.
If you are in the mood for toast, the Chang Jiang Toast with kaya and butter (RM6.60) or butter-only version (RM6.60) are for pairing with white coffee.
The bread is toasted to a crisp, but I would have wished for more generous spread of butter and kaya.
Kin Loong Valley Chang Jiang White Coffee may not offer the best meal in Ipoh, it can be worth a visit for those who want to experience traditional white coffee with surrounding limestone hills.
Oh yes, you can also explore nearby attractions like Tasik Cermin and Mirror Lake (additional fees apply).
