[London] What? Wait? £8.50 a small cup of strawberries covered in chocolate sauce.
One does not realise the power of social media until they see the long snaking queue at Turnips in Borough Market.
I have seen TikTok videos of people claiming they travelled across the world to London specifically for this treat, which I firmly thought was a bit of an exaggeration.
This offering of strawberries dipped in chocolate sauce has not just tantalised taste buds but also stirred a bit of controversy.
This treat became even more popular after an incident where the market authorities briefly banned the sale, claiming they did not meet the produce criteria.
This ban, fortunately, was quickly overturned due to public outcry and the viral nature of the product on social media, which only boosted its popularity further.
Visiting Borough Market, you are likely to witness a lively scene: staff dispensing rich, gooey chocolate into a cup of lush, ripe strawberries.
The ever-running chocolate fountain and never-ending queue are quite the spectacle.
I didn’t want to get them at first, but the free sample helped (and I thought I could write about this for the blog as well – otherwise it would have been a ‘no’ for me.)
Surprisingly, these were indeed quite good.
The strawberries were fresh and juicy, their natural sweetness paired well with the velvety Belgian chocolate.
Is this anything new or ground-breaking? No.
It can be an overhyped and overpriced indulgence, especially in a market brimming with more substantial and varied culinary options.
Is this a viral treat worth having? Possibly yes, if you have £8.50 to spare.
But this strawberry treat is likely one-time indulgence rather than a regular stop for frequent market-goers.
