[Sapporo] Talk about one of the best (maybe the best) snack souvenir you can get from Hokkaido, and it will certainly be from Rokkatei 六花亭.
The Japanese confectionery chain is famed for its delicate, flower-inspired sweets that blend traditional flavours with artistic presentation.
The one thing to get? Their Marusei Butter Sandwich.
The Marusei Butter Sandwich was first introduced in 1977 to celebrate the company’s rebranding.
This popular treat consists of a rich filling of white chocolate, cream, and raisins sandwiched between two soft, crumbly biscuits.
(I know there is a short expiry date, but Singaporeans do buy them back and put in the freezer compartment.)
Therefore, I made it a point to visit Rokkatei’s main store in Sapporo.
The bonus? There is a café upstairs.
It is not difficult to get to – just a quick 5-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station. Just head west towards Nishi (West) 6-Chome along Kita 4-Jo (North 4th Avenue).
You can also take the Sapporo Subway Station. The store is about a 4-minute walk from Sapporo Subway Station. Use the same westward direction along Kita 4-Jo.
As you enter the patisserie, you will be greeted by a picturesque array of desserts featuring local ingredients like Yubari melon, lavender, and Hokkaido red beans.
But there’s more than just shopping for treats.
The second-floor café where you can unwind over a variety of sweets and drinks.
From there you get a lovely view of the first-floor garden.
A must-try is their Marusei Ice Sandwich (250 Yen), a refreshing take on a beloved classic.
It takes the traditional Marusei butter biscuits and fills them with ice cream with white chocolate and raisins.
The light, crumbly biscuits complement the creaminess of the ice cream, and the sweetness of the raisins. So good, pure bliss.
Are you fond of Cheesecakes? In Hokkaido, you MUST try one.
You should appreciate their Premium 25 Cheesecake (500 Yen), baked for two and a half hours.
The result is a decadently creamy texture that glides on your tongue. Enjoy a slice served with a dollop of fresh cream and topped with a macaron for a touch of elegance.
For a savoury option, I had the Baguette Sandwich (Poroshiri) (400 Yen).
They use an in-house-baked fresh baguette filled with hand-roasted beans, bacon, tomato sauce, mozzarella, and parmesan cheese.
The café also offers delights like the Yukikon Cheese (250 Yen), Pancakes (750 Yen), Strawberry Parfait (650 Yen), and a selection of drinks.
Some fun fact: Rokkatei’s logo and the recurring floral patterns in their products are inspired by the “rokkakudo” a hexagonal flower pavilion.
It reflects the “snow flower” which symbolises Hokkaido’s wintry landscapes.
