[Bangkok] Who loves Pad Thai too?
Ah, the Thai dish of stir-fried rice noodles, cooked with shrimp, chicken, or tofu, and flavoured with tamarind sauce. Then add a dash of lime juice, crushed peanuts, and crunchy bean sprouts.
Love it for the balance of sweet, sour, and savoury flavours.
I was searching for good Pad Thai online, and found myself at Pad Thai Mae Thong Bai at Siam Square Soi 9.
Originally stemming from Thong Bai Phosana with a history since 1959, a renowned family restaurant from Pathum Thani, the shop carries forward a legacy of home-style recipes.
The eatery is a popular spot for tourists looking to enjoy a well-crafted plate of Pad Thai. Guess they came here from Xiao Hong Shu?
The menu is straightforward, focusing primarily on their signature dish, which is cooked to order with fresh ingredients.
You spot a row of cooks behind the glass panel frying up a storm non-stop.
Options at Pad Thai Mae Thong Bai include Stir-Fried Thai Noodles with Shrimp (THB 280), Traditional Tom Yum Kung (Spicy Prawn Soup) (THB 550), Stir-Fried Crispy Pork with Fresh Chilli over Rice with Fried Eggs (THB 180), to Grilled River Prawn (THB 980).
Starting with the signature item, Pad Thai (THB 280) noodles were relatively well-cooked, neither too soft nor too firm.
While it was pricier than the average plate around, at least there was addition of relatively large-sized river prawns.
The dish was garnished with the usual accompaniments – crushed peanuts, lime, and bean sprouts – allowing diners to adjust the flavours to their liking.
Is it the best around?
I had better ones, to be honest. And I wished for more wok-hei (wok heat), but it was still a respectable plate.
Some might find the portion sizes modest, especially considering the price, which is slightly higher than typical street food offerings.
To be honest, I actually preferred the Crab Scrambled Egg with Rice (THB 280).
The comforting dish combined soft, fluffy scrambled eggs with the delicate sweetness of fresh crab meat – which was quite generous.
The dish was subtly seasoned, allowing the natural flavours of the crab to shine through..
The dining space is clean, but not particularly spacious, which can make it feel cramped during peak hours.
Overall, the service is efficient, though not particularly warm, which aligns with the fast-paced environment of the eatery.
