[Bangkok] Charoen Krung is one of Bangkok’s oldest and most vibrant streets.
Make a visit there, and you would find this blend of historic charm with modern development, offering a mix of traditional markets, street food and hipster cafes.
A Thai friend recommended Charoen Krung 18 Fish Noodle to me, saying that it is a childhood hood since growing up.
Charoen Krung 18 Fish Noodle is one of those unassuming, hole-in-the-wall spots that has managed to capture the hearts of locals.
It was so packed when we visited early morning, mostly with Thai regulars it seems.
To get there, you can take the MRT Blue Line to Wat Mangkon Station, exit towards Charoen Krung Road. It is just across the road.
Each bowl cost THB 60 each, included with fish balls, fish dumpling, fish cake and garnishes.
The portion is small, and I can imagine that even one person can order two bowls (but I was fine as that could save me stomach stomach for more street food).
The fish balls here are the star of the bowl.
They are made fresh without any fillers, giving them a distinctive texture that is both chewy, firm and bouncy (yet they are denser than those found in Singapore).
The noodles can be served in a clear broth that is light yet flavourful.
Alternatively, opt for the dry version, where the noodles are tossed with a fragrant, savoury sauce, which my friend recommended to be the better option.
Despite the simplicity of the setting, with its basic tables and chairs and the hustle and bustle of a typical Bangkok street-side eatery, the service is efficient.
However, the experience isn’t without its quirks.
The eatery’s popularity means it can get quite crowded, especially during peak hours.
The limited seating might require you to wait or share a table with strangers, which could be a turn-off for some.
Finding the place may be slightly challenging as it is hidden from plain sight, but it is usually worth the effort.
