[Bangkok] Odean Noodle in Bangkok’s Chinatown is a small, unassuming spot that has garnered a mixed reputation over the years.
The highlight of the menu is their Crab Claw Wonton Noodle soup, a dish that has become a bit of a local legend.
To get to Odean Noodle from the train, take the MRT Blue Line to Hua Lamphong Station.
Exit the station through Exit 1, and from there, it’s a short 10-minute walk along Charoen Krung Road towards the Chinese gate of Odeon Circle.
The restaurant is located near Wat Traimit (the Temple of the Golden Buddha), in the event you also want to explore Bangkok’s Chinatown.
You may find the menu slightly confusing at first. Key offerings include Noodle with Prawn Wonton and Crab’s Claw (THB 150 – 550, depending on size) or Noodle with Prawn Wonton and Crab’s Top Claw (THB 200).
There are also combinations like Noodle with Prawn Wonton, Roasted Pork, or Crab.
I ordered the signature version, which was slightly pricey at THB 450.
The bowl is centred around the star ingredient — a succulent crab claw, which is served atop traditional yellow egg noodles.
The crab claw, while not as large as I initially imagined, was packed with sweet meat. It was okay.
The noodles were firm, the broth flavourful without being overly salty.
The prawn wontons, generously filled with prawns, added another layer of flavour and texture to the dish.
The menu at Odean Noodle also features a variety of other dishes including Fish Maw Soup (THB 85), Noodle with Chicken Sauce (THB 70), and Noodle with Prawn Wonton and Chicken Sauce (THB 80).
Additionally, there are sides like Boiled Hong Kong Kale (THB 90) and Boiled Glass Lettuce (THB 90).
However, the experience may not live up to the hype for everyone.
There is this simple, old-school atmosphere and the comforting taste of the dishes.
On the other hand, others have found the eatery difficult to locate and were disappointed by the service, which can occasionally come off as indifferent.
But it retains a certain nostalgic charm that some find endearing. If you’re in the area and craving a traditional Thai-Chinese noodle experience, Odean Noodle may be worth a visit.
