[BANGKOK] Thai milk tea is an iconic drink in Thailand, typically made using condensed milk and evaporated milk.
The most famous and oldest Thai milk tea brand is definitely ChaTraMue, also known as the Number One brand with red and white packaging, which has been around since 1945.
In recent years, we have seen more Thai tea leaves manufacturers apart from the familiar ChaTraMue.
Located near the bustling streets of Chinatown (Yaowarat), KHIRI Thai Tea is a recommended spot for Thai tea lovers in Bangkok.
The brand has recently opened a 2nd outlet, a kiosk to be precise, on the ground floor of Siam Paragon for better accessibility.
Housed within a 3-storey building, KHIRI Thai Tea has a cosy setting for tea lovers to hang out and enjoy some drinks.
Specialising in premium Thai teas sourced from different regions across Thailand, eight different Thai tea leaves from Lamphun, Chiang Rai, Nan, Mae Hong Son, Phrae, Pattani, Lampang, and Phayao can be found on their menu.
The tea leaves from each region have different intensities.
Those from Lampang and Phayao being the lightest, Nan and Mae Hong Son between Light and Medium, Chiang Rai and Lamphun in the Medium range, and Phrae and Pattani in the Dark range.
Each Single Origin Tea (12oz THB 110, SGD 4.40; 20oz THB 130, SGD 5.20) is freshly brewed on the spot and served in a mini teapot with fresh milk on the side.
Customers can also choose from 0%, 50%, 100%, or 150% sweetness (no joke!).
It was a tough choice, but I went for the tea leaves from Chiang Rai, which offer medium intensity with hints of sugarcane, apricot, and floral notes.
The flavours are well-balanced and not overpowering, without the astringent taste that lingers in the mouth.
Having chosen 0% sweetness, I appreciated the individual tasting notes in the tea leaves more than the usual Thai milk tea that most people are familiar with.
Apart from Single Origin Tea, you can also select your preferred tea leaves for their specialty drinks, such as Black Sesame (THB 130, SGD 5.20), PB & Tea (THB 130, SGD 5.20), and Thai Tea Dirty (THB 140, SGD 5.50).
I recommend their On Cloud (THB 130, SGD 5.20), a Thai Milk Tea shaved ice made from their House Blend Thai Tea topped with cream and coconut crispy roll.
It somehow reminds me of the Thai milk tea shaved ice at After You Desserts, but with a more distinct and robust tea flavour.
The shaved ice is soft, fluffy, and not overly sweet, with notes of burnt caramel, candy, and roasted nuts.
I recommend KHIRI Thai Tea if you are a tea lover, as it adds more options and complexity to the Thai milk tea scene.
