On the bakery aspect of cafes, two brands have dawned on our shores – Bakery 1946 수형당 with its distinctive Korean baked goods, and from Taiwan Hazukido Singapore with very innovative Croissants.
What better way to celebrate August and our National Day this month with the opening of the local bakery, Ling’s Patisseries.

Fusion of Luxurious Design and Japanese-Inspired Cuisine
Caracara, the new café and bar on Neil Road, impresses immediately with its lavish interior, hinting at the investment made by its owners, who also operate a high-end furniture business.
Reflecting its name, which means a type of social falcon, Caracara’s decor includes various stylish furnishings and areas, including a counter reminiscent of a Japanese omakase restaurant, opposite booth seating.
The menu features a mix of Japanese-inspired dishes, including Hokkaido Hotate Carpaccio ($22) and Smoked Salmon Salad ($22).
The mains include Wagyu Sukiyaki Don ($32) and Miso Gindara ($28), alongside a no-carb option, the No Carb Day! at $18.
Additionally, the Pork Sando with Fries ($26) delivers a succulent experience with its panko-crusted pork cutlet, enhanced by wasabi and served on Shokupan bread.
The café also offers an Aurora beans latte, noted for its grape and rum tasting notes, recommended to be paired with Cara’s special cold milk.

The menu also highlights comfort classics like the Potato and Egg, a satisfying blend of sous vide eggs with roasted potatoes and sourdough croutons.
A personal favourite, the Dearborn Breakfast Sandwich, is a testament to the kitchen’s prowess, combining homemade pork sausage, American cheddar, egg, and a spicy pepper relish, all sandwiched between fluffy sweet potato buns.
For granola lovers, Dearborn continues to excel with options ranging from a simple granola bowl paired with yogurt to more elaborate versions featuring coffee yogurt, hazelnut butter, and cherry compote.

Two Men Bagel House has launched a new concept called Alley Way at Lorong Telok near Boat Quay, offering a distinctive menu featuring Bagelwiches, Bombes, and gourmet snacks.
The quirky branding and décor provide a casual atmosphere, albeit with limited seating on small stools outside, reminiscent of an old-time “towkay” setting.
The Grandmaster Bagelwich, combines spicy chicken, spicy aioli, cheddar, mayonnaise, and pickled cucumber. Like a chicken burger with chewy bagel bread.
The menu includes the cheekily named East Coast Plan, featuring spam, fried egg, and spicy ketchup, which is like a breakfast bread.
The gourmet snacks, including Cornfucius Says and Fountain of Wealth, offer a mix of sweet and savoury options to round out the meal.

Known for its distinctive baked goods, especially the viral K-Apple Bread, the bakery continues to intrigue with its authentic Korean-inspired flavours and designs.
The new outlet offers a 30-seater space, beautifully adorned with traditional Korean aesthetics, providing not just a culinary but a visual treat to its patrons.
The menu remains true to its roots with signature items like fruit and vegetable buns that genuinely replicate their real-life counterparts in taste.

From Home Baker to Heartland Gem At Potong Pasir
Founded by Chef Ivy Ling, who transitioned from a home baker to a café owner, this patisserie reflects a true passion for baking.
A standout item is the Pandan Kaya Roll Cake, a beautifully crafted dessert that pairs the fragrant aroma of pandan with the rich, creamy texture of kaya.
Another interesting creation is the Sourdough Brioche Bolo Bun, available in plain, buttered, or curry potato variants.
Opting for the curry potato, I was treated to a delightful mix of spicy and savoury, packed within a bolo bun like exterior that maintained a perfect crumbly crust.
