Yat Ka Yan Dessert – Bugis
9 Tan Quee Lan Street, #01-03, Singapore 188098
Opening Hours: 12pm – 12am (Mon, Wed – Sun)
Yat Ka Yan, initially celebrated for its local desserts at the Fortune Centre, has blossomed with a new outlet.
Since its humble beginnings in early 2020, the dessert shop has expanded its reach, now boasting additional space at its original location and a new outlet on Tan Quee Lan Street, near Bugis Junction.
Despite the abundance of dessert spots in the area, Yat Ka Yan sets itself apart with its commitment to treating patrons like family and providing a range of heartwarming traditional desserts.
The menu at Yat Ka Yan’s new location offers a variety of treats, from Yam Paste and Sesame Paste to Chendol and Yammy Chendol – made with quality ingredients like freshly squeezed coconut, self-cooked red beans, and carefully selected gula melaka.
The shop also serves a refreshing Cheng Tng, packed with ingredients and balanced sweetness, and Tang Yuan Ginger Soup, featuring tender glutinous rice balls in a robust ginger broth.
Though best known for its sweets, Yat Ka Yan also offers savoury delights, like the Cai Po Chee Cheong Fun, a simple yet flavourful dish.

Siyuan Desserts 思源糖水铺
111D King George’s Avenue, Singapore 208559
Opening Hours: 12:30pm – 9:30pm (Tues – Sun), Closed Mon
The local dessert scene in Singapore is witnessing a modest revival with the introduction of several new establishments, including Siyuan Desserts 思源糖水铺 at Jalan Besar.
Siyuan is aptly located next to a cheongsam shop, enhancing its oriental ambiance.
Siyuan Desserts prides itself on a diverse menu that includes warm desserts like Almond Cream, Sesame Paste, Walnut Cream, Orh Nee, Cheng Teng with Peach Gum, Lotus Seed Suan, and Pulut Hitam.
They also offer cold treats such as Chendol and Mango Sago, with prices ranging from $4 to $5.50. During a visit, the recommendation to try the Yuan Yang 2-in-1 bowl led to a preference for the smooth, balanced, but not overly sweet Almond Cream over the Sesame Paste.
I enjoyed the Chendol ($4) for robust gula melaka flavour, though the dessert’s texture could benefit from smoother ice.
Despite areas for texture refinement, the overall experience at Siyuan Desserts encapsulates warmth and nostalgia, mirroring the shop’s distinct oriental atmosphere.

Potong Pasir’s Latest Café Merges Korean Industrial Chic with Local Singaporean Flavours
Fullybooked is a new café in Potong Pasir, located at 45 Tai Thong Crescent, taking over the space from Gu Ma Jia.
Despite its name suggesting a possible bookstore café ambiance, Fullybooked diverges from expectations by offering a selection of local Singaporean dishes rather than the typical café menu of coffee and pastries.
The interior boasts a trendy, Korean industrial design with chic grey tones, plants, and raw-textured walls, creating a hipster vibe that could be easily found in Seoul.
The menu features local favourites such as Mee Siam, Mee Rebus, Curry Chicken, Curry Chee Cheong Fun, Nasi Lemak, and Lotus Soup with rice.
The Traditional Kaya Toast with Butter had crispy toast with a thick layer of butter and smooth kaya spread.
This combination of hipster aesthetics with traditional local fare presents an intriguing concept.

All Day Brunch, Homemade Pasta To Frothy Teh Tarik At Jalan Pisang
I took a walk down from Bugis MRT to the bugis eatery. Their interior ambiance, inspired by the laid-back brunch culture of Bali, features an open-dining kitchen concept that adds to the overall dining experience.
The menu is pretty extensive, with offerings of “fabulous eggs”, entrees, mains, all day brunch, homemade fresh pasta, risotto to a small dessert menu.
The Wagyu Beef MB 8-9 Omelette at Brunch Club ($18) came well-presented, close to Instagram worthy. Delving into the pasta options, we had the Signature Lemak Chilli Crab Bucatini ($24), that attempts to marry local flavours with Italian finesse.
To round off the meal, the Frothy Teh Tarik ($4) and Frothy Teh Pandan Ice ($6) offer a local twist on the classic pulled tea.
