Guan Kee Fried Carrot Cake 源记正宗菜头粿 found at the bustling Albert Centre Food Centre used to be one of my favourite places for ‘chai tow kway’ in Singapore.
Recently, it was included in the Michelin Guide Singapore with a Michelin Selected and I decided to pay a revisit.
Known for both its black and white versions of carrot cake, this hawker stall stands out with its dedication to a well-executed dish.
Though I heard that the next generation has taken over the ropes.
The first thing I noticed was prices had gone up quite a fair bit to $4.50, $5, $6 and $7 (previously prices started from $3).
A mixed Black & White ‘Yuan Yang’ Carrot Cake plate costs $7 or $9.
You can choose between white (salty) or black (more sweetish), though I generally prefer the black version here.
The black carrot cake at Guan Kee is especially notable for its caramelised, slightly sweet taste, attributed to the generous use of a dark soy sauce.
This adds a distinct richness and colour to the dish.
The cake itself is moist and soft, creating a pleasant contrast with the caramelised bits.
Conversely, the white carrot cake is more focused on the egg and radish cake itself, which is fried to achieve a balance of soft and crispy textures.
I remembered that the cake itself was softer and wobblier in the past, and came with more generous portion of eggs.
But I still appreciated its generous inclusion of ‘chye poh’ (preserved radish), which lends a slightly salty flavour, enhancing the overall savouriness of the dish.
Still one of the better Carrot Cakes around this area.

The owner had changed and the chef is a completely different person. Forget this stall and move on. The new prices are ridiculous and not worth patronizing anymore.
