[Seoul] Is this one of the most charming and nostalgic Starbucks in Seoul?
Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 스타벅스 경동1960 is more than just a café; it is a space rooted in Seoul’s cultural and historical narrative.
Some fun facts: The location occupies what was once the Gyeongdong Theatre, a structure originally opened in 1960.
The theatre once served as a hub of entertainment for decades, hosting films and performances that brought together the local community.
When Starbucks took over the space in 2022, it marked a new chapter for the building.
The original architectural features, such as the tiered seating arrangement and the high ceilings, were retained, offering a glimpse into the building’s past. And I am so glad they retained them.
To reach Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 by subway, take Line 1 to Jegi-dong Station and use Exit 2. Walk straight into Gyeongdong Market, and the café is near Gate 4.
Walking through the busy stalls, I almost missed the discreet green Starbucks sign marking the entrance. It felt like finding a hidden treasure.
Climbing the stairs into the café, I was struck by how the space managed to hold on to its past while embracing the present.
The first thing that caught my eye was the high ceiling and the tiered seating that immediately reminded me this was once a theatre.
Seating is ample, with approximately 200 seats arranged in a manner that reflects the original theatre’s audience layout.
Even small details, like the digital board displaying customer orders styled like film credits, pay homage to the theatre’s cinematic history.
Exposed concrete walls and vintage-style furniture gave the space an air of nostalgia without trying too hard. The light was warm, natural, and soft, which made the café feel calm despite its size and crowd.
I chose a seat on the upper level, which gave me a view of the entire space. It felt cosy and private, yet connected to everything happening below.
The menu aligns with standard Starbucks offerings, featuring a variety of beverages and pastries.
Among the coffee selections, the Vanilla Cream Cold Brew (5800 Won) offers a smooth, creamy twist on the classic cold brew.
The Jeju Matcha Latte (5900 Won) is a unique option that features a local Korean ingredient, adding a regional touch to the menu.
Notably, this location includes an in-house bakery, providing fresh breads and cakes. Like Peanut Cream Cinnamon Roll.
Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 felt more than just another branch of a global coffee chain. It felt thoughtful, like someone cared to honour the past while creating a space for the present.
