[Ipoh] When I was searching for pretty dessert cafes in Ipoh, La Patisserie Gourmande was one of the names that came up on IG’s explorer page.
There are actually two locations in Malaysia: one in Ipoh at Jalan Lau Ek Ching, and another in Gopeng at Taman Kinta.
Upon entering, you are greeted with a minimalist yet inviting interior, a soothing escape from the hot weather outside.
But wait, there was actually a huge space as you push open another door into a backyard.
Great for photos, but the inside was better air-conditioned though.
The focus is clearly on the food, with large pastry displays drawing attention as soon as you walk in.
If you are there for the savouries, there are the Nasi Lemak (RM6.90), Asam Laksa (RM10.90), Mushroom Aglio Olio (RM16), and Chicken Bacon Aglio Olio (RM20).
All-day meal choices also include the Gourmande Breakfast (RM30), Signature Local Breakfast (RM18), Mushroom Soup with Croissant (RM18), and a more affordable Omelette Breakfast (RM10).
I was clearly aiming for the sweets, and found myself tempted over the Oolong Peach (RM21) with Oolong mousse, peach jelly, and almond crunch, and the Tiramisu (RM18), made with homemade ladyfingers and mascarpone.
For citrus lovers, the Strawberry Orange (RM21) combines cheese mousse and blood orange crémeux. (I happened to see their cakes at another popular Ipoh café – Kommons.)
If you prefer something richer, there are options like Earl Grey Chocolate (RM21) with dark sponge and 70% dark chocolate mousse, and Hazelnut Passion Mousse (RM20).
The Framboise (RM20) immediately caught my eye with its glossy red glaze and elegant design.
Cutting into it revealed layers of raspberry mousse, jelly, and 70% dark chocolate sponge.
It was indulgent but not overwhelming.
The pastries, without question, are the heart of the experience.
The croissants, with a variety of them from Curry Chicken to Pistachio Cherry, were flaky, buttery, and light.
For the most part, service here is unobtrusive, allowing customers to enjoy their treats at their own pace.
The seating is comfortable, and the arrangement feels intimate, providing a quiet and relaxing atmosphere with pretty treats.
