[Ipoh] Tau Fu Fa is probably the most iconic dessert in Ipoh.

This is due to the city’s reputation for producing high-quality, smooth-textured tofu, thanks to its mineral-rich spring water.

For those who have yet to try it before, it is a traditional Chinese dessert made from soft, silky tofu served with sweet syrup, often ginger or sugar-based.

Some popular places to have it in Ipoh include Funny Mountain Beancurd, Big Mom Beancurd, and Woong Kee Traditional Bean Curd.

I ordered the Signature Cold Tau Fu Fa (RM 7.50) which came like a shaved ice dessert, with the sweet beancurd as the base.

The combination of chewy taro balls for texture, slightly nutty taste of black glutinous rice, and caramelised sweet from the gula melaka works pretty well together as a cooling treat.

However, I was not entirely blown away by the beancurd portion.

It is a decent version but not particularly outstanding when compared to other similar stalls in Ipoh, especially the texture. Just not as glide-down-your-throat silky smooth.

Still, it is the ambiance and the history of the area that add to the charm of visiting this spot in Ipoh’s Old Town, making it more about the overall experience than just the food.
