[Hong Kong] Croissants have been evolving in shape over the past year.
The classic French croissant has changed into shapes and sizes such as the TikTok-viral Giant Croissant, Onigiri Croissant (at NUDAKE Seoul), Circular Croissant, Cube Croissant (at Cafe Margaret), Flat Croissant, or even Croissant Waffle.
In Hong Kong, Arte by Padaria has ‘court’ up with the trend and is really on the ‘ball’ (pun unintended), by introducing a unique and delectable creation – the French Croissant Ball.
Arte by Padaria has garnered positive attention for its inventive and visually appealing pastries.
To get there, you can head to the K11 Musea shopping center located at Victoria Dockside, 18 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon side.
Taking inspiration from the classic French croissant, Arte by Padaria has decided to create a “full-moon” shaped croissant, which ended up as a Croissant Ball.
This innovative pastry is a fusion of the classic croissant with a flavoured Madeleine within, complemented by different fillings to blend multiple tastes and textures together.
Available in both sweet and savory flavours, check out the Matcha & Red Bean (HKD 36, SGD 6.30), Chocolate & Hazelnut Clusters (HKD 36, SGD 6.30), Red Velvet & Almond (HKD 38, SGD 6.60), Earl Grey & Mango (HKD 36, SGD 6.30), and Shrimp Paste & Meat Floss (HKD 36, SGD 6.30).
A golden, flaky croissant exterior shaped like a mini basketball, each croissant ball has different colors and stripes to indicate the different flavours.
I enjoyed the Earl Grey & Mango Croissant Ball (HKD 36, SGD 6.30) with an Earl Grey Madeleine and tiny mango cubes in it.
Unlike what they claimed, the croissant outer layer is more “bread-like” instead of flaky and crispy.
What I liked is the fragrant Earl Grey Madeleine that is soft and moist, complemented by the tropical taste of the mango fillings.
The Matcha & Red Bean Croissant Ball (HKD 36, SGD 6.30) is worth a mention, using Tokachi red beans from Hokkaido that balance with the earthy profile of the Matcha Madeleine.
The French Croissant Ball at Arte by Padaria is a delightful fusion of flavors and textures that showcases the bakery’s innovative ideas and execution to make food fun and interesting. Worth a try.
